AutoConfig and Autodiscover in cPanel

Posted on September 22nd, 2016

Autoconfigure and Autodiscover option in cPanel allows you to easily configure a user’s mail client to receive their cPanel email. This works with mail clients like Outlook Express and Thunderbird. There are several methods as an email client can attempt to automatically configure. The popular methods are Autoconfig (Thunderbird, more *) and Auto Discover (Microsoft, Samsung Android). Autodiscover uses Exchange Active sync (EAS) and Exchange Web Services (EWS) which allow any Mail Client that supports Autodiscover to configure the appropriate server settings for communication. We do not have to input all the configuration manually. It’s very useful for administrators and users. Autodiscover also uses SSL certificates. The goal of auto configuration is to make it very easy for users to configure the connection of Thunderbird to their email servers. In many cases, people should be able to download and install Thunderbird, enter their real name, email address, and password in the Account Setup Wizard. Users should expect to have a fully functioning mail client that sends and recieves their mail as securely as possible.

Enable AutoConfig and Autodiscover

1) Navigate to Domains section of Tweak setting interface of WHM (Home >> Server Configuration >> Tweak Settings).

2) Locate the following settings and toggle them on.

–> Proxy Subdomains Setting.

–> Thunderbird and Outlook autodiscover and autoconfig support (enables proxy subdomain and SRV record creation) setting.

3) Click the button ‘Save’.

We can also enable additional Autoconfig and Autodiscover settings that are “Preferred mail service to configure to use for Thunderbird and Outlook autodiscover and autoconfig support”. This allows you to choose email transfer method to use with email clients like Thunderbird and Outlook.

Set default “Preferred mail service to configure to use for Thunderbird and Outlook autodiscover and autoconfig support” as imap.

Autodiscovery and Autoconfiguration records

cPanel automatically creates auto discovery and auto configuration DNS records for the domain. These records enable Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail clients to automatically discover and configure access to the e-mail accounts. We can create auto discovery and auto configuration DNS records for our domain. These records are used to enable Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird email clients to automatically discover and configure access to email accounts. These records do not cause any issues. However, if we face any issues with these records, we can use the Advanced DNS Zone Editor to delete them. To re-create the records, add A records for the autoconfig and autodiscover subdomains.
